IFAA Chair, Honourable Kgalema Motlanthe, Honoured with Honorary Doctorate by the University of Johannesburg
The Institute for African Alternatives (IFAA) extends heartfelt congratulations to Honourable Kgalema Motlanthe, Chair of our Board, on being conferred an honorary Doctorate in Politics and International Relations by the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on 18 March 2025. This prestigious recognition is a testament to his decades of unwavering dedication to advancing democracy, social justice, and equitable governance in South Africa.
As a former President of South Africa, Honourable Motlanthe’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping the country’s democratic journey, while his continued advocacy through the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation highlights his commitment to education and socio-economic development, particularly in the areas of digital literacy.
In his acceptance speech, Honourable Motlanthe spoke passionately about the importance of intellectual integrity and critical thinking in addressing contemporary challenges. He encouraged graduates and leaders to approach the modern era with courage, emphasising that in times of uncertainty, boldness and independent thought are crucial.
At UJ’s 20th anniversary celebrations, Honourable Motlanthe’s legacy continues to inspire future generations of leaders and advocates for positive change. His recognition underscores his outstanding contributions to both South Africa and the African continent as a whole.
