The Living Rights Festival presents a screening of “Pathways to Light”

Join us for a poignant evening as we screen “Pathways to Light,” a compelling episode from Enver Samuel’s groundbreaking documentary series “Truth Be Told.” This special event will take place at Bertha House Cinema in Mowbray, Cape Town, on Wednesday, 30th October 2024, from 19:00 to 20:30.

We are thrilled to announce that Director/Producer Enver Samuel will introduce the film in person, providing insight into the powerful narratives explored in the series. Following the screening, there will be an engaging discussion where attendees can reflect on the themes presented.

“Truth Be Told” is a six-part documentary series that examines the lives of six young activists who lost their lives at the hands of the apartheid security police, framed through the lens of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This series sheds light on stories that remain untold, highlighting instances where accountability is absent and justice remains elusive.

In “Pathways to Light,” we delve into the life of Bheki Mlangeni, a dedicated human rights lawyer killed in a tragic act of violence. On 15 February 1991, a booby-trapped Walkman, sent by the notorious apartheid policeman Eugene de Kock, claimed his life. Five-year-old Mandla Mlangeni, Bheki’s son, witnessed this horrific event, which has profoundly shaped his life and artistic expression. Now, as a jazz musician, Mandla uses music to navigate his grief and honor his father’s legacy through his debut album, “Bhekisizwe.”

This screening not only memorializes the past but also resonates with ongoing struggles for justice. We invite you to engage with these vital narratives and reflect on the impact of history in shaping our present.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of a conversation that matters. We look forward to seeing you there!
