You’re Invited to the Living Rights Festival: Bertha House Weekend!
Step into a world where art and activism collide! Join us on Friday, 25 October, and Saturday, 26 October 2024, for an unforgettable weekend at Bertha House, Cape Town. Over two days, we’ll celebrate the powerful voices and creative energy of artists, activists, and young leaders as they explore what it means to stand up for justice, community, and our shared future.
What’s on the Programme?
From stunning visual art exhibitions by talented artists like Zara Newman, John Barrow, Velile Soha, and Songezo Zantsi, to engaging panel discussions and an artist walkabout, you’ll get a firsthand look into the stories behind their art. Be ready to experience thought-provoking installations and hear directly from the creators!
Friday starts with a youth talent showcase at the Open Mic – Speak Truth to Power session, where young voices take the stage to share their perspectives on the world through music, poetry, public speaking, comedy, and visual arts. This is followed by an evening of music and poetry with the Cape Cultural Collective, blending soulful sounds and powerful words highlighting the beauty of cultural expression and solidarity.
On Saturday, immerse yourself in a Popular Education Workshop led by renowned educators Shirley Walters, Astrid Von Kotze, and Vanessa Reynolds and explore how we can build “really useful knowledge” for resilience and justice. Then, experience the life of anti-apartheid activist Ashley Kriel through the moving documentary Action Commandante, introduced by its director, Nadine Cloete.
This weekend promises to be fun-filled, inspiring, and packed with opportunities to connect with others who are passionate about art, justice, and social change. It’s an event you won’t want to miss!
