The Writers’ Workshop, a co-project of IFAA, Surplus Books, and the Cape Cultural Collective, continues to attract a dedicated group of budding writers, young, published or unpublished, from across the community, who come to meet and interact in the space. This initiative shows great potential for consistently engaging a diverse group, bringing them into a creative environment, and building a solid network.
Six monthly workshops were hosted over the first two quarters of the year. A few ‘spinoff’ workshops resulted, one with high school students, and the other with the ‘Youth Arise’ civic youth group. Another positive result has been the formation of a Reading Group, in association with the CAYCO youth group. This group will hold its first seminar in the 3rd quarter focusing on the work of Frantz Fanon as a start.
The Writers’ Series has great potential to involve writers from all over the Global South, and encourage much-desired intergenerational conversations, and engagement between established writers and new voices.
Two outcomes have been targeted:
- To produce a performance event in the 3rd Quarter of 2024
- To produce a print edition of writings produced by the group in the 4th Quarter of 2024
