Reflections on Sport and Physical Culture in South African Society

The Surplus Books Reading Incubator Project and The Institute for African Alternatives invite you to join us for this unique panel discussion entitled ‘Reflections on Sport and Physical Culture in South African Society’. This session will be led by Dr. Francois Cleophas, a Sports and Social Historian based at the University of Stellenbosch. Francois has published extensive research on the histories of physical culture in marginalized communities and is the editor of two books on the subject ‘Exploring decolonizing themes in SA Sports History: Issues and Challenges’ and ‘Critical Reflections on Physical Culture at the Edges of the Empire.’  These titles are available for sale at Amazon and Takealot. The discussion will be chaired by Prof. Chris Reddy of the Department of Curriculum Studies at Stellenbosch University and features inputs from contributors to the aforementioned books, Lesley Le Grange, Malcolm Maclean, and Farieda Khan. Farieda’s presentation takes us on a historical journey from the point of view of the mountaineering community, exploring how this sporting community responded to the changing political landscape in South Africa, stretching as far back as the 1930s.

This event will be held on Saturday 19th March at Surplus Books, 302 Albert Rd, Woodstock at 11 am. It will also be simultaneously streamed on Zoom and the Institute for African Alternatives Facebook page, The IFAA Forum.
