Kumi Naidoo gives the 2024 Ben Turok Memorial Lecture

The 4th Ben Turok Memorial Lecture will be delivered in Cape Town on 9 December by South African human rights and climate justice activist Kumi Naidoo. He is a South African human rights and climate justice activist. He was International Executive Director of Greenpeace International and Secretary General of Amnesty International. Naidoo served as the Secretary-General of CIVICUS, the international alliance for citizen participation. He is currently President of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative and is co-founder of the Riky Rick Foundation for the Promotion of Artivism started with his wife in honour of their late son, the South African Rapper, Riky Rick

The annual memorial lecture is a joint initiative of the Institute for Social Development at the University of the Western Cape and the Institute for African Alternatives. IFAA was founded by Prof Turok who served as its Director until his death in December 2019.

It is held in recognition of Prof Turok’s seven decades of political activism as an uncompromising and unrelenting critic of the abuse of power and all forms of injustice and discrimination. The annual Ben Turok Memorial Lecture aims to preserve his political legacy based on socio-economic development, justice, redistribution and political transformation.

The 2024 Ben Turok Memorial Lecture, titled ‘Reimagining Activism: Mobilizing for Justice in a Fractured World,’ will focus on how civil society can evolve to meet the urgent and growing needs of the changing planet.
