IFAA Public Forum: Youth Unemployment

The Institute for African Alternatives will mark Youth Day by inviting you to attend a public discussion on the critical challenge of Youth Unemployment on Tuesday 15th June 2021 at 3pm.

Youth Unemployment is one of South Africa’s most formidable challenges and now even more exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite massive government investment in youth employment programmes over the years, such interventions have had miniscule success in creating sustainable employment (The unemployment rate for people from age 15-24 has been recently estimated at as much as 74%).

Underlying this situation is the education and training system, which has struggled to create pathways for secondary school leavers and college graduates alike to enter the job market. Countless studies have attributed the high unemployment rates to the poor quality of education and training and the low levels of skills that are unsuitable to the economy. The discussion will be led by Dr Seamus Needham of UWC’s Institute for Post School Studies, who will focus on why post-school education and training is failing to articulate young people into jobs and universities. We have invited professionals from the education and training sector and members of civil society to participate in discussion and offer suggestions as to how government especially can improve its policies to improve the articulation of school leavers into the workplace.
