IFAA Public Forum: South Africa’s Urban Farming Revolution

Urban farming is not a new phenomenon but it has proliferated rapidly in recent years. This has been driven by advances in technology and global challenges that include food insecurity, energy shortage, urban migration, poverty, unemployment and environmental degradation.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization urban farming is currently practised by over one-tenth of the global population. These projects range from commercial city farms to indoor vertical farms to rooftop gardens to urban beehives and more.  Word leaders include China where the state has invested significantly in indoor vertical farming and Cuba where crippling agricultural shortages of oil, feed and fertilizer prompted an urban farming revolution.

The urban farming revolution in South Africa holds great potential for the struggle against its high levels of poverty, unemployment and food insecurity. It also presents lucrative opportunities for innovative entrepreneurs, job creation and community building.

The Institute for African Alternatives has invited a few ambitious local projects to share with us their inspirations, challenges and successes. Please join us for this very interesting discussion.
