IFAA Forum: NSFAS and the Education Crisis

Featuring speakers: Chwaita Mtsewu, Duma Nqulube and Morris Masutha

According to the findings of the Auditor-General, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has incurred R5 billion in irregular expenditure for the 2019/2020 period, while the figure for  2018/2019 is  R3.2bn.

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, Science and Technology has described the National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) audit outcomes under administration as the “worst ever”. These shortfalls and inability to account for most of the funds have led to great frustrations in institutions of higher learning, as the challenges of the past have continued to persist. The administration of NSFAS has not improved with a continuance in late payments to universities and a veil of fraud and corruption allegations that constantly hovers over this critical institution.

The frustrations of the NSFAS fund have for many years been a thorn in the flesh of The Department of Higher Education and it is evident that there is a need to reform the way that it is modelled, to more effectively tackle these yearly challenges.

The IFAA Progressive Corner is of the view that critical conversation is required on this thorny issue as a starting point to influence the Department of Higher Education. This forum is intended to serve as a platform for academics, student activists and other voices who are involved in these issues to bring public pressure to bear on the authorities.
