IFAA Forum: Book Launch

Other Side of the Track: by Clement Du Plessis

Surplus Radical Books and the Institute for African Alternatives invite you to join us for a book launch of “Other Side of the Track”, by Clement du Plessis. This event happens on Monday 22nd May 2023, at 6 pm at Surplus Books, Bertha House, Main Rd, Mowbray, Cape Town.

The first book about non-racial athletics in South Africa narrates a collection of stories about high schools, clubs, and college athletics at venues around the country and traces the origins of non-racial athletics as far back as 1898.  Its contents relive the glory days (to 1994) of Green Point Track in Cape Town, Athlone Stadium, Daljosphat Stadium in Paarl, Gelvandale Track in Port Elizabeth, Curries Fountain in Durban, and De Beers Stadium in Kimberley – in the way you have experienced it.

The book covers all the disciplines of athletics from track and field, and cross country to road running.

Expertly compiled, with great visuals and print values, this book is a marvel of self-publishing, a ‘must have’ for lovers of local sport and readers alike.

Please join us for this book launch!

“The book is relevant, timely, and grounded in rigorous research. In this compelling and comprehensive book, Clement du Plessis marshals his extensive experience, his profound passion, and his diligence to place on record these untold stories so that we might celebrate them. This book challenges us to radically rethink the shape, purpose, intent, and impact of sport in education. This book serves as a catalyst for us to bring the sport back to our schools. It is an urgent call to action.”
