The Southern Centre for Inequality Studies, Surplus Books and The Institute for African Alternatives are pleased to invite you to join us for the book launch of ‘The Capital Order: How Economists Invented Austerity and Paved the way to Fascism,’ by political economist Clara E. Mattei.
This event will be hosted in The Activist Café at Bertha House, 67-69 Main Rd Mowbray, Cape Town at 6 pm.
A Financial Times Best Book of the Year, “In The Capital Order, political economist Clara E. Mattei explores the intellectual origins of austerity to uncover its originating motives: the protection of capital—and indeed capitalism—in times of social upheaval from below.
Drawing on newly uncovered archival material from Britain and Italy, much of it translated for the first time, The Capital Order offers a damning and essential new account of the rise of austerity—and of modern economics—at the levers of contemporary political power.”
This event will be moderated by Thokozile Madonko who is a Research Manager at the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies and we are also pleased to announce Leonard Gentle as Discussant. Gentle is a long-time South African political activist and trade unionist and is the retired director of the International Labour Research and Information Group (ILRIG).
