IFAA FORUM: “Too White to be Coloured. Too Coloured to be Black” Ismail Lagardien

The Institute for African Alternatives and Surplus Books is pleased to host a critical forum featuring writer, columnist, and political economist Ismail Lagardien. He has recently published a book entitled “Too White to be Coloured. Too Coloured to be Black: On the search for home and meaning” which is garnering critical attention and praise around the country. A searing personal memoir, the book is more than just an exploration of the conundrums of identity and belonging in South Africa. In the words of journalist Chris Roper, it reads as “an obituary for what Lagardien describes as ‘the reveries of nonracialism, democracy, justice for all, ethical, transparent and available government’ that characterized the early years of democracy.
